Meeting roles
Every Toastmasters meeting runs on volunteers who each take a role. Rotating through the roles is how members build skills — and it's what keeps a meeting flowing. Here's what each role does, with printable sheets for the hands-on roles at the bottom.
Leadership roles
- Toastmaster of the Day — the meeting's host and MC. Introduces each segment and keeps things moving.
- General Evaluator — evaluates the meeting itself and leads the evaluation team, then gives an overall report.
- Table Topics Master — prepares and runs the impromptu-speaking segment.
Speaking and evaluating
- Speakers — deliver prepared speeches from their Pathways projects.
- Evaluators — give each speaker a short, encouraging evaluation (see How to give a great evaluation).
Functionary roles
- Timer — times every speaker and signals green / yellow / red as they reach their timing windows.
- Ah-Counter — notes filler words ("um", "ah", "so", "like") and crutch phrases to help members speak more cleanly.
- Grammarian — introduces the Word of the Day and notes memorable language, both good and improvable.
- Ballot / Vote Counter — collects and tallies the votes for the meeting's awards.
Support roles
- Sergeant at Arms — sets up the room, opens the meeting, and handles logistics.
